Intégration de sources multiples d'information dans l'identification lexicale et l'acquisition de nouvelles représentations lexicales

- Résumé : This study investigates how French listeners exploit phonological and phonetic cues in segmenting continuous speech into words. We examined how these listeners integrate multiple sources of information not only in lexical identification, using the word spotting task, but also in the storage of new lexical representations, using an artificial language learning task. Results showed that the specific segmentation cues examined had different weights in these two tasks. Syllable onsets, simultaneously cued by allophonic variations and phonotactics, played a predominant role in lexical identification while stress was a “last-resort” segmentation cue. In contrast, rhythmic information, particularly primary stress, played a greater role in lexical acquisition while syllable onsets were not used as segmentation cues. These results suggest that caution is required in relating results on lexical acquisition and lexical identification.

- Résumé : The spectral characteristics of the French schwa as well as its relation to its neighboors [œ] and [ø] are investigated. The origin of the speakers and the segmental context are controlled. Three regions are compared : Nyon (CH), Brunoy (F) and Québec (C). Schwa in Brunoy is more closed and less rounded than in the other regions. These same differences were observed for the entire vowel set. In all three regions, schwa differs from [œ] and [ø], on at least one formant. Often closer to [ø] in anteriority and aperture, it is closer to [œ] in rounding. Furthermore, the schwa vowel is not more variable than its neighbors. These results underline the necessity to take into account the origin of the speakers, the segmental context as well as the three first formants to describe this vowel.

Doit-on supposer un niveau de représentations pré-lexical de nature phonémique ?

- Résumé : This study examines the nature of the phonological representations mediating spoken word recognition by means of phonetic priming in which primes and targets are phonetically similar but share no phonemes (GUESS - CAGE). We found an inhibitory priming effect of similar size for words and non-word primes in both a shadowing and a same-different judgement task. Together, these findings suggest a sublexical locus of the inhibitory phonetic priming effect and an intermediate phonemic level of representation between featural and lexical representations.
