A TRANSDISCIPLINARY MEETING ON

« ANTICIPATION »

UNIVERSITÉ MARC BLOCH - STRASBOURG II

19- 20 - 21 NOVEMBER 2003

(second announcement)

The speakers in this meeting, who belong to diverse areas in the cognitive sciences such as speech production and perception, writing-reading skills, semantics, biology, neurophysiology, robotics, psychology and philosophy, will endeavour to show how anticipatory factors contribute, not only to the construction of cognitive entities that appear in the "present", but also how they may be part and parcel of this emerging "present".
To talk about anticipation - or seizing an "object" beforehand during a specific action - with respect to the generation of the cognitive process, does not only imply talking about preparatory and pre-adjustment mechanisms. It is also important to evoke sensory-motor modalities pertaining to retention, which is traditionally confined to biomechanical and physiological constraints inherent to the final effectors of a gesture, and also to more global contextual constraints referred to as "passive" constraints of the action in general.
It is true that in the time-course of the appearance of a cognitive agent in its specific environment, its timing may reveal three co-articulated phases: 1) an anticipatory extension; 2) the "target" portion of the semiotic act; 3) a retentive extension. If the first and the third phases, when rationalising an action are usually associated to the "past" and to the "future" respectively, the second one, the proper domain for cognitive focalisation, would thus correspond to the "present". However, perceptual data reported in the literature seem to rather support an integration of these three stages in the global perception of the phenomenon. In fact, perception of the "target" or of this relevant "present", regardless of the domain where it is observed, is related to neurodynamic patterns, kinematics and other factors that drift towards and away from the target, and are equally important as this target, if not more, for its perception.
Emphasis will be made on the necessity to analyse the emergence of these entities - gesture, sound-phoneme, letter, word, sentence, text, behaviourŠ - in their natural contexts, where their embodiment reveals the real value of their intentionality.
Priority will, however, be given to the anticipatory dimension of these phenomena, because of the predominant role that it seems to play in the implementation of emerging cognitive processes.
The theoretical and practical epistemological project of the meeting, whose main thrust is to bring out and establish relations between different anticipatory factors in the diverse disciplines, will instigate a terminological and conceptual de-compartmentalisation of paradigms adopted to approach the envisaged themes.
The lectures will be accessible to a relatively large audience: academics in different areas, doctoral students, junior researchers, etc.

D. La campagne ESTER

Appel à Participation
(English version below)

Introduction:
-------------

- Radio France International (RFI) : 15 heures d'émissions transcrites

Introduction:
-------------

The aim of the ESTER campaign (l’Evaluation des Systèmes de Transcription
enrichie d’Emissions Radiophoniques / Evaluation of automatic broadcast news
transcription systems) is to promote the evaluation of speech processing
systems
for the French language, to establish a permanent evaluation infrastructure
and to
disseminate, as widely as possible, the information and the resources
acquired in
the campaign. The ESTER campaign forms part of the EVALDA project and is funded
by the French Ministry of Research in the context of its Technolangue
programme.

In the context of the ESTER campaign, the transcriptions are to be
annotated with
additional and associated information such as speaker turns, named entities
etc. On the
one hand, such an enriched transcription aims to provide an orthographic
transcription
of an audio signal and on the other hand, a structured representation of an
audio document
enabling information extraction from audio files. The aim of evaluating the
quality of the
associated annotations, along with the evaluation of the orthographic
transcriptions, is to
establish a reference or benchmark of present performance levels of each
component of
an indexation system whilst also providing an idea of overall system
performance.

Participation:
--------------

Research and development centres, public or private, wishing to take part
in the ESTER
campaign are invited to make themselves known to the campaign organisers
(see below)
in order to register as participants. On registering as a participant and
signing an end-user
contract, you will receive the data available for Phase 1 of the campaign.
The contract will be
sent to you after declaring your interest in the campaign.

Those participating in the ESTER campaign will receive the
training/development/test data free
of charge (providing results obtained during the evaluation campaign are
returned). The data
provisionally available for distribution are listed below:

- Le Monde: 1997- 2002
- MLCC: Transcriptions of debates from the European Parliament (1992-1994)
- France Inter: 25 hours of transcribed broadcast news
- Radio France International (RFI): 15 hours of transcribed broadcast news

Participants that return results for the obligatory evaluation tasks are
permitted to keep the data
mentioned above, for no additional cost.

For more information on the project and the timetable, please consult the
project website:
